Packaging in international e-commerce: how to choose it and what it costs

Packaging is the material (box, bag, envelope, filler) used to protect and present a product for shipping, and it largely defines the chargeable weight and the damage rate.

In cross-border, the parcel goes through more hands and more scans than in a domestic shipment, so it needs enough protection, but every extra centimetre is paid in volumetric weight.

The practical rule: the smallest packaging that protects the product, bags for soft products, boxes for fragile ones, and no box inside a box unless needed.

How Packaging works in our operation

In MailAmericas fulfillment the system chooses each order's packaging from the SKU's dimensions and weight. The seller can use the warehouse's packaging or register their own (boxes A, B, bags) as packaging SKUs, which are deducted from stock on every dispatch.

Frequently asked question

Is packaging charged separately?

It depends on the contracted service. If the seller registers their own packaging as SKUs, that is used and deducted from their stock.
