SKU: what it is and why every product needs one

The SKU (stock keeping unit) is the unique code that identifies each product, or each product variant, within a warehouse's inventory.

Two variants of the same product (size, colour) are two different SKUs, because they are stored, counted and sold separately. The SKU is the key that links the store listing, the order and the physical unit on the shelf.

Each SKU is loaded with description, dimensions and weight. Those data define the packaging for each order and the shipping cost.

How SKU works in our operation

In MailAmericas' Self-Service Portal each product is loaded as a SKU with its four data points: code, description, dimensions and weight. The inventory shows available units per SKU, and a replenishment with a new SKU creates it automatically.

Frequently asked question

Can I use the same SKUs I have in my store?

Yes, and it is recommended: when the store and the warehouse share the SKU, the integration syncs stock and orders with no mapping tables.
