Air freight: how e-commerce parcels travel between countries

Air freight is the transport of cargo by plane, the usual mode for international e-commerce parcels because of its speed compared with sea freight.

The consolidated load travels in the hold of commercial or cargo flights, documented with an air waybill (AWB). The cost is calculated per kilo, taking the greater of actual weight and volumetric weight.

Air freight is the cost component that varies most: it depends on route, season and available capacity. That is why cross-border rates are reviewed frequently.

Shipping with MailAmericas

How Air freight works in our operation

MailAmericas works with a multi-carrier model: it books space with different airlines according to the route and frequency that work best for each destination, instead of depending on a single one. That keeps departures regular even when one route gets complicated.

Frequently asked question

Why is air freight charged by volumetric weight and not actual weight?

Because a plane has a space limit as well as a weight limit. A light but bulky parcel takes space another parcel cannot use, and the rate reflects that space.
