Freight forwarding: what an international freight agent does

Freight forwarding is the service of organising the international transport of a load: booking the freight, preparing the documentation and coordinating the route between origin and destination.

The freight forwarder usually does not own the planes or ships. It acts as an intermediary that knows the routes, the rates and each country's requirements, and arranges the best combination for each load.

In e-commerce it is used to move large loads: stock replenishment to a warehouse abroad, for instance, travels as freight forwarding, not as individual parcels.

Frequently asked question

What is the difference between freight forwarding and parcel shipping?

Freight forwarding moves grouped cargo (pallets, large packages) from one point to another. Parcel shipping moves individual units all the way to the end buyer.
