Last mile

Last mile: what it is and why it is the hardest leg of the shipment

The last mile is the final leg of a shipment, from the distribution centre in the destination country to the buyer's door, and it is usually the most expensive leg and the one that most defines the delivery experience.

It concentrates the hard variables: badly written addresses, absent buyers, restricted-access areas, time windows. A shipment can cross the ocean without trouble and fail in the last few kilometres.

It is operated with own networks, third-party networks (postal services, local carriers) or a combination. An own network gives control; third parties give quick coverage where direct operation is not worthwhile.

MailAmericas runs its own last mile in Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Mexico, Peru and Uruguay, with third-party networks in the rest of its more than 80 destinations. The own operation is what sustains the 98.7% average on-time delivery in the Cross-Border service.
